HISTORY
Skipsea Castle is a Norman Motte & Bailey castle located south of Bridlington, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is a prominent castle. All that remains visible today are the earthworks, having been destroyed by the order of Henry III of England.
Skipsea Castle was built in & around 1086, in the years following the Norman Conquest by Drogo de la Bouerer, the First Earl of Holderness, in order to defend against Viking raids. He is related to William the Conqueror through marriage to William's cousin, and participated in the Norman Invasion of England. For this, William the Conqueror placed Drogo's name on the "immortal Roll of Honour of Battle Abbey at Senlac or Hasting", and rewarded Drogo with "so-called 'isle' of Holderness".
Although Drogo built the castle, he eventually fled back to Flanders because death of his wife whom he "unhappily killed". He then rode a fast horse to the king's court, borrowed a large sum of money from William and took ship to the continent before news of his deeds could reach the court. The ghost of a 'lady in white' is said to haunt Castle Hill".
In the 13th century, William de Froz II, Lord of Holderness rebelled against the king. As a result, in 1221 William de Froz II was excommunicated and Skipsea Castle was destroyed. Eventually, William de Froz II reconciled with King Henry III in 1227. Skipsea Castle was returned to William de Froz II, but without any defences.
INVESTIGATION
Welcome to our eleventh investigation which was a new location near Hornsea on the east coast.
We arrived at location around 10.30pm & started the walk towards the hill where the castle used to be. On arrival at the motte, myself & paul headed up to the top of the hill to find a safe route up for the rest of the team. The hill is a steep climb...care should be taken when heading up to the top!!
Once all the team were safely on the site of the old castle site, we gathered into a circle ready for our first vigil. We decided to start of the night with a seance.
Corrine stood in the middle of the circle with the pendulum while carrying out this vigil. Corrine came across two names, firstly a gentleman called Peter who was circling us & then a lady called Agnes. Corrine felt these to spirits were connected in some way. We went around the circle letting everyone call out before moving on to ask questions relating to a yes or no answer. Using the pendulum to recieve a yes answer by a circular movement & a no answer by a swing side to side movement.
After finishing the seance, Rich decided to go off by himself for a walk. Brave Richard!! As Rich went off, the rest of the group felt there was something in the far field which we were overlooking & corrine felt a presance with us... so we decided to call out, Unfortunately we didnt get nothing really positive back.
After spending a few hours on the site of the castle, we felt it was time to move below onto the motte to carry out a vigil there. We safely got the team down the hill then walked round the motte. We continued until Corrine felt we were being followed, so we decided to form a circle & do a seance. We asked for a stone to be thrown back, unfortunately we got nothing, we whistled to see if the tune was repeated but unfortunately again we didn't recieve anything positive. Corrine senced that children were near by & we did get banging noises but we couldn't positively put them down to paranormal activity due the immediate surroundings.
